Ally Bromsfeldt is a parody of Ashleigh Banfield, who readers probably don't remember anymore. I'm not even sure if Ashleigh still works for MSNBC.
Ashleigh Banfield's coverage of the 9/11 attacks brought some unintended humor for an otherwise dark series of days. She'd cut into the news broadcasts, but she never really had anything important to report. She'd kind of fumble around in debris, picking up things like rubber gloves and office paper, which she'd then wave in the camera.
And then she dyed her hair brown and took a fieldtrip over to Afghanistan, where she basically drove around and did nothing of any real importance.
Watching an Ashleigh Banfield report from Afghanistan was sort of like watching someone's vacation trip movies. They were probably exciting for the people there, but it's pretty boring for anyone else watching.
I suppose Ashleigh inspired me to create this character, because her coverage wasn't really about the tragedy. It was all about Ashleigh. That's basically Ally Bromsfeldt.
